Right after the independence of Bangladesh, the dream of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build a hunger and poverty free Sonar Bangla by mobilizing the rural poor people, he became the charioteer of the Sonar Bangla from the beginning of BRDB. If we evaluate the activities of BRDB since independence, we can see that BRDB has successfully completed 118 poverty alleviation and rural development projects and the main objectives of all these projects were agricultural development, poverty alleviation and people's participation. So far BRDB has organized around 5587 lakh rural men and women through 1.87 lakh associations/groups where human capital has been created to the tune of Tk 787.08 crore. 16804.48 Crores has also provided loan assistance on low interest/terms. BRDB has provided 18360 deep tube wells and 3.55 lakh different types of irrigation equipment as irrigation equipment to rural organized farmers. BRDB has already imparted skill and human development training to 38.33 lakh beneficiaries and as a result successful beneficiaries trained at rural level are playing a role in socio-economic development. Various government agencies and research institutes have already evaluated the activities of BRDB as shown in a study conducted by BIDS in 2010. BRDB has been successfully supporting beneficiaries in poverty alleviation and women empowerment. The study states that the poverty rate in BRDB's working area is 11% which is much lower than the national average and the same study shows that BRDB's unit contribution to GDP is 1.93% which is truly commendable.
