Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) has been continuously working for the socio-economic development of rural poor people since independence. BRDB is the single largest government agency in rural development and poverty alleviation in terms of experience and scope. The Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP) was adopted to implement the 'Comilla Model' introduced in the sixties and widely acclaimed. BRDB was established as a government institution through an ordinance in 1982 after evaluating the success, contribution and importance of IRDDP in rural development. The main objective of IRDP was to organize rural medium, small and marginal farmers under cooperative societies to modernize agriculture, increase production and achieve self-sufficiency in food. Later in 1975 special projects/activities aimed at women development were launched. In the early eighties, poverty alleviation schemes/programmes were adopted with emphasis on employment generation, income generation and improvement of their socio-economic living standards of the rural poor. At present, BRDB is working towards the goal of integrated rural development by organizing the small and resourceless poor people of the rural areas under cooperative societies and informal groups in line with the rural development policies and strategies of the government.
